SHIP WITH NEW BMWS, SAABS, AND VOLVOS SINKS AFTER COLLISION

December 16, 2002—A ship reportedly carrying 2,862 new BMWs, Saabs, and Volvos, sank over the weekend after colliding with a container ship in fog north of the French port of Dunkirk, media reports said. The 24-member, mostly Filipino crew of the Norwegian Tricolor were rescued after they abandoned the ship in shallow waters in the English Channel. The captain and two officers were picked up by the badly damaged Bahaman container ship, Kariba, which had left Antwerp but was returning for inspection. The two ships were on parallel courses and one of them apparently had a radar defect, reports said. The Tricolor had left the Belgian port of Zeebrugge bound for the English port of Southampton. Martha McKinley, BMW of North America business communications manager, tells AutoExec that there were 335 BMWs aboard the ship, and that they are "a total loss." The BMWs were expected to arrive at the Oxnard (Calif.) Vehiport in early to mid January. "We are now in the process of working with dealers to identify the vehicles and the customers—because many of them were presold—to try to come up with the best resolution possible to get the customers in new BMWs as soon as possible," she says. Saab Cars U.S.A. spokeswoman Tiffany Cook says the Tricolor was bringing 500 Saabs to Port Brunswick in Georgia. Most had already been sold to dealers, but the others were expected to be allocated by December 26, when they were scheduled to arrive. Volvo Cars of North America spokesman Stephen Bohannon says there were 1,800 Volvos aboard, including 350 of the automaker's new XC90 sport-utility. Customers have ordered 7,000 XC90s, so the assumption is all 350 were presold, he says. Volvo was shipping the vehicles to Port Brunswick and Newark, N.J. Bohannon says the company is trying to do everything it can to satisfy customers.

Kako dobro dihtajo BMWji, bi rekel da jim ni dosti škode, če jih bodo takoj dvignili. Kako globoko pa sploh so?

Ja pa še ena stvar glede solz. V nedeljo so po Kanal1 ob 12 kazali kako testno reciklirajo BMWje. Avti so imeli po 8000km, letnik 2002, službena vozila vseh vrst. Kar pri srcu me je stiskalo, ko so se spravili na trojko. A kdo slučajno ve, kje je ta recycling center za BMWje? Bi bilo za tja it po dele ali pa kar po cel avto. Naj kar mojega reciklirajo, če mi dajo kakega z 8000km prevoženih.
